How to Bake Bacon Baby!

We avoid processed and cured meats 99% of the time due to the nitrates and nitrites in them.   Every once in a blue moon I will make some bacon for breakfast on Sundays.  I’m lucky in that only 2 out of the 4 of us like anyway.  But when I do make it, I like the Hormel Natural Choice brand.

Is bacon the best choice under the sun?  Absolutely not.  But like I’ve said before, we live by the 80-20 Rule and besides my Spinach, Apple, Feta and Bacon salad wouldn’t be the same without it.

But did you know that you could bake it instead of frying it?  This is the ONLY way I make bacon and I thought I’d share it with you.  There are 2 secrets to this though:

  1. Start with a cold oven
  2. Use a baking sheet that has a lip (like a jelly roll pan) or else you’ll end up with grease all over your oven

First you want to line your baking sheet with parchment paper and lay your bacon strips out one at a time with about an inch in between them.

Put them in a COLD oven and turn the oven on to 400.  When the oven reaches 400 THEN time it for 10-12 minutes.  The bacon may not appear very crispy at this point, but you really don’t want to over cooked baked bacon.  It just ruins it.  Trust me on this one 😉

Put it on some paper towels until you are ready to eat it.

Now wasn’t that much easier?

  1. We love bacon as a family. If we let him, my oldest would eat it 3 times a day. We love Hormel’s Choice, Simple Truth, or Applegate’s bacon. Depends which one is cheaper or what I have a coupon for that week. We cook it in the microwave. Put it on a dish, and nuke for 3 to 5 minutes – depending on the bacon and how many pieces. Makes it easy for us, when it is a breakfast -4- dinner kind of night. 😉
