Flintstone’s Vitamins ~ Are they Safe?

Do you give your kids daily vitamins such as Flintstone’s?  Then you might want to read this post.

Flintstones Vitamins are supposed to be the Pediatrician’s #1 Choice, right?  But do all Pediatricians know the shocking list of chemicals that are in these vitamins? flintstones

I looked up Flintstones Chewable Vitamins with Iron for kids.   Here is their claim:

Flintstones Complete With Iron chewable vitamins for kids help support:*

  • Energy with Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, and Iron by helping to convert food to fuel
  • Immune Health with Vitamins C, E, and Beta-Carotene
  • Eye health with Vitamins A, C, and E

Flintstones chewables are easy for kids to chew with great tasting flavors and fun character shapes.

A little further digging and I found the ingredients:

INGREDIENTS: Sorbitol, Mannitol, Fructose, Sodium Ascorbate, Ferrous Fumarate, Silicon Dioxide, Carrageenan, Natural and Artificial Flavors, FD&C Red #40 Lake; Less Than 2% Of: Aspartame†, Beta-Carotene, Cholecalciferol, Cyanocobalamin, D-Calcium Pantothenate, dl-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, FD&C Blue #2 Lake, FD&C Yellow #6 Lake, Folic Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Niacinamide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Soy Lecithin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Acetate.

HOLY **** BATMAN !!!!  Is this for real????

Sorbitol -Sorbitol is used as a sweetening agent and used as a sugar substitute.  The very FIRST ingredient in a children’s vitamin is a sweetener.  Nursing mothers are advised to avoid Sorbitol while pregnant.  It has a laxative effect and excessive amounts can cause bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, cramping and other abdominal problems. The severity of this problem for children is hotly debated.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest feels so strongly about this, they filed a petition to the FDA requesting the following clause be added to labeling, “’NOTICE: This product contains sorbitol, which may cause diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain. Not suitable for consumption by children. To protect yourself, start by eating no more than one serving at a time.’

Mannitol – Mannitol is used as a sweetener in food.  It’s also used to treat those with acute renal failure and kidney issues.  It is very close in relation to Sorbitol.  They are both sugar alcohol molecules.

Fructose – again another form of sugar.  Glucose and Fructose are simple sugars.  The body produces glucose, it is vital to life.  Fructose is not.  We do not produce fructose.  Please read this article from Mercola “Sugar may be Bad, but Fructose is Far More Deadly

Carageenan – this food additive has been a KNOWN dangerous allergen since 1940, yet it’s still classified by the FDA as “safe for human consumption”?   Yes, this is the same FDA that also approves MSG (linked to brain damage, obesity, and cancer), aspartame (linked to MS, seizures, memory issues, and blindness) and saccharine (linked to many cancers).

Natural & Artificial Flavors – both artificial and natural flavors contain chemicals. The distinction between natural and artificial flavorings is the source of chemicals. Natural flavors are created from anything that can be eaten (i.e animals and vegetables), even if those edible things are processed in the lab to create flavorings.

Most artificial flavorings are derived from petroleum. They have been shown to affect the RNA, thyroid, and enzymes. Most have never even been studied for safety or toxicity.  Take a look at the list of 49 ingredients that make up strawberry flavoring.

One artificial flavor that has been “outed” recently was diacetyl. A research study published in the journal Toxicological Sciences proved that the substance used to flavor popcorn causes a very dangerous lung disease called lymphocytic bronchiolitis.

Artificial Colors  Most artificial colors are made from coal tar, which is a carcinogen.  According to Mercola, com, “Red #40 is the most-widely used and consumed dye.  It may accelerate the appearance of immune system tumors in mice.  It also causes hypersensitivity (allergy-like) reactions in some consumers and might trigger hyperactivity in children”.  Mayoclinic.com also agrees that Red #40 and Yellow #6 may contribute to kids hyperactivity issues.  As of July 2010, the European Union implemented warning labels with foods containing dyes.

Aspartame – another sweetner Aspartame is a synthetic combination of the amino acids aspartic acid and l-phenylalanine, and is known to convert into highly toxic methanol and formaldehyde in the body.  Aspartame has been linked to over 40 adverse health effects in the biomedical literature, and has been shown to exhibit both neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity [1]

Bayer is a German pharmaceutical company founded in 1863.  In 1925, it merged with IG Farben, a German chemical industry conglomerate, notorious for it’s roll in the Holocaust.  It is stated that 100% of all explosives and of all synthetic gasoline came from the factories of IG Farben.

It is well documented that IG Farben was closely connected with the Nazis.   During the Nazi takeover of Germany, IG Farben became involved in numerous war crimes.  They collaborated with the Nazi Government to produce and patent large quantities of the pesticide Zyklon B, the chemical used to gas millions of Jews to death in gas chambers.

This is the very same company who is making your children’s vitamins.

I think it’s time we take a closer look and examine what we are giving to our children.  All it takes is a little awareness to see what it going on around us.  We are programmed to see these cute commercials with angelic children living fulfilling, happy lives as long as they take their vitamins.   These commercials are meant to manipulate us to see what they want to see and hide what they don’t want us to see.

Just being aware can produce massive change in the world.  Please don’t turn away and let this continue.  We need to know what we are digesting and how it affects our health.   These are HUGE powerful money hungry companies with very little interest in our health.  The mere fact that the company responsible for the chemicals used in gas chambers is enough for me to never give them another dime.

One person CAN make a difference and my kids health and lives are worth it.  Are yours?

The chemicals in these vitamins are not only shocking but downright dangerous!  Manufacturers, such as Bayer, often take the stance that the majority of children are not getting the recommended daily allowance of certain vitamins and minerals.  They feel products such as Flintstone’s bridges that gap.

I beg to differ!

The chemicals and additives in these vitamins do more HARM to our little children’s bodies than GOOD.  We must make our voices heard!   I simply cannot comprehend why our Federal Government approved this product, but even worse, our family pediatricians and doctors recommend it.  Thousands upon thousands of kids have taken these vitamins, including my own.

I urgently implore you to write to Bayer and let them know your child’s health is at risk by taking these vitamins!

  1. This is mind boggling! What is a good alternative??

  2. I hear ya sister! I learned that a lot of vitamins (both children’s and adults) end up going in one end and coming out the other. I did extensive research and tried Megafoods vitamins for both myself and my daughter. I was having a serious iron deficiency and within three months on those megafoods blood builder vitamins–I was back on track to a completely normal iron level. Apparently they are whole foods so your body has ‘total absorption’ or what have you. It is a bit harder to get my daughter to actually swallow an entire pill versus chewing a delicious candy like vitamin but she got the hang of it and now she takes them daily along with a DHA vitamin. I couldn’t believe what was in those children’s gummy vitamins you see at all drugstores and grocery stores…not to mention the fact that you actually HARDLY absorb any of the actual vitamins that are the very reason you take them in the first place It is crazy!. It’s all commercials and colors and bad bad bad! Great article. I hope many parents find this useful and find vitamins for their children that actually offer total absorption! There are some good ones out there, you just have to do your homework and look. I have an excellent resource at a local organic grocery market by my house who introduced my family to the vitamins I mentioned above and once I saw the blood yes results–i was sold! Anyway, thanks for sharing. I have a humor mom blog and would love for you to stop by. I found you thru Tom Mommy Blogs.Have a great night! http://www.smashleyashley.com

    • Hi Ashley – I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. All I really want to do is raise awareness. We can’t just brush this under the carpet anymore. These are dangerous chemicals going into our kids bodies. And I FIRMLY believe moms would never buy these vitamins if they knew this. Never! We trust Bayer, we are manipulated by the cute commercials. We hear our Drs say our child is low in iron or another vitamin and are advised to add a multi vitamin to their diet. We go to the drugstore and let them pick it out b/c we don’t want to waste our money on something they won’t take and they of course pick the worst ones out there and we go on with our lives. We have to become more aware! I hope moms like you will share this article with other moms so they can make better choices like you did for you and your daughter.
