Make THIS, Not THAT!: Taco Seasoning

Make THIS!

Making your own taco seasoning is very simple.  I usually double the recipe so I have extra on hand and store it in an airtight container in my pantry.  It uses popular spices most of us already have on hand like chili powder, cumin, red pepper flakes and oregano.

 Not THAT!

taco seasoning

FoodFacts Grade:  F

Ingredients (11):

Maltodextrin, Salt, Pepper(s) Chili, Onion(s) Powder, Spice(s), Monosodium Glutamate, Corn Starch Modified, Corn Flour Yellow, Soybean(s) Oil With BHT Partially Hydrogenated To Protect Flavor, Silicon Dioxide Added To Prevent Caking, Flavor(s) Natural

Maltodextrin – Have you ever looked at what’s in the store bought taco seasoning mix?  The FIRST ingredient is Maltodextrin.  REALLY????  As the first ingredient??  Maltodextrin is a food additive.  I have not found any compelling research that suggests it is the worst thing for you, as a matter of fact I have come across some body building websites that PROMOTE using Maltodextrin as the body processes it very quickly like glucose and is easily digestible.  However,  Maltodextrin also contains MSG AND it’s listed in the ingredients as a separate ingredient a SECOND time.  I did a blog on the dangers of MSG.  You can click here to read that.

Then let’s add some partially hydrogenated soybean oil, silicon dioxide and some natural flavors…. I don’t know about you but those aren’t ingredients I keep in my pantry!  How about you?
