What is a compound butter?
Compound butter is a combination of butter, herbs and spices that are mixed together, chilled and then used as toppings on proteins/veggie or served with breads, pastas and salads. They are a super simple way to add tons of flavor to your foods. Listed below are 3 of the most popular butters I keep on hand in my house.
It is softened, usually unsalted, butter that is creamed together with herbs and/or spices for creating either a sweet or savory butter.
Typically, people roll it in parchment paper to create the signature “log” and then cut it into rounds. You can then serve it either on top of proteins or vegetables or add it to a dish to create a sauce.
Alternately, you can whip your compound butter and serve it as a spread for bread, waffles, and muffins.
Herbed Compound Butter
- Place a pat of herb butter on top of grilled steak, roasted chicken, or hot-off-the-grill seafood. As the butter melts, it will infuse your protein with a delicious herbaceous taste.
- Add a spoonful of herb butter to a hot skillet and let it melt before adding your ingredients. Sauté vegetables, mushrooms, or shrimp in the herb-infused butter for an extra layer of flavor.
- Spread herb butter onto freshly baked bread or rolls for a savory twist. You can also melt it and brush it onto sliced baguette before toasting for a flavorful crostini base.

Jalapeño Lime Butter
- Drizzle it over fajitas, tacos, or quesadillas for an extra burst of flavor. It adds a spicy and aromatic twist to your favorite Tex-Mex dishes.
- Toss roasted vegetables, such as potatoes, corn, or Brussels sprouts, with jalapeno herb butter right after they come out of the oven. The butter will melt and coat the veggies, adding a fiery kick and herb-infused richness.
- Melt jalapeno herb butter and use it as a zesty dipping sauce for breadsticks, grilled shrimp, or roasted potatoes. Its spicy and herby notes will complement a variety of appetizers and sides.

Whipped Cinnamon Maple Butter
- Spread whipped cinnamon maple butter on freshly toasted bagels, English muffins, or pancakes for a decadent and flavorful start to your day. The combination of cinnamon and maple adds a touch of sweetness and warmth to your morning meal.
- Use whipped cinnamon maple butter as a delectable spread for muffins, scones, or warm biscuits.
- Stir a spoonful of whipped cinnamon maple butter into your coffee for a cozy and indulgent treat.
- Brush whipped cinnamon maple butter onto slices of pineapple, peaches, or bananas before grilling
