How to Make Turkey Burgers That Don’t Suck
- The secret to their scrumptiousness lies in a simple yet perfectly balanced combination of ingredients. Begin with a pound of ground turkey as the foundation for these delightful patties. Then, it’s time to elevate the taste with grated Gruyere cheese, infusing each bite with a delectable cheesy goodness.
- To add a burst of freshness and texture, finely diced onions and carrots make their entrance, complementing the turkey and cheese harmoniously. For the perfect binding agent, add some bread crumbs into the mix, ensuring each burger holds together.
- To take the flavor profile to new heights, generously spread Dijon mustard, just shy of a quarter cup, throughout the mixture. This zesty addition adds a delightful tang and depth.
- Season the burgers with sea salt and pepper, to taste, for that perfect balance of savory goodness. Gently mix all the ingredients together with your hands, ensuring everything is evenly combined to create the ultimate turkey burger patty.
- Form the mixture into four luscious patties, and if you’re not cooking them immediately, pop them into the refrigerator for later. When it’s time to grill, simply cook them over medium heat, allowing each side to sizzle for approximately 5-6 minutes per side.

Tips to Perfecting that Burger:
- Tip #1 – Moisture – Turkey is a lean POULTRY, it is not beef. Therefore there is a lack of moisture that needs to somehow be replaced. Some have suggested mayo, yogurt, cheese. We chose mustard, and not just ANY mustard. It must be a whole grain Dijon mustard that will yield the great flavor these burgers produce. Egg is also another binder that can be used, however we chose to not add eggs.
- Tip #2 – Flavor – Unlike ground beef, ground turkey has a very mild flavor, almost no flavor really. So the addition of spice (like the mustard) is needed. We chose to keep this recipe pretty simple and just add some onions and carrots.
- Tip #3 –Don’t overmix – It’s super easy to want to keep mixing or smashing the meat with your hands until every little bit is combined. But that will result in a very dry, over mixed, and dry burger. Handle the meat very gently and make the patties without smooshing them.
- Tip #4 – Let ’em cook – Cook the turkey burgers over a preheated, lightly oiled skillet. Do not press with the spatula or move around. Let it cook for approximately 4 minutes, flip and cook the other side. If you are cooking these on a grill, again, make sure it is very hot, put the burgers on, do not press down, close the lid and let them cook for approximately 4 minutes, flip and cook the other side until the internal temperature is 160°F.
These turkey burgers are not just any ordinary burgers – they’re a celebration of flavor and a testament to the incredible potential of turkey. So, the next time you want to elevate your burger game, give this recipe a try, and you’ll never look back. Savor the deliciousness, share it with loved ones, and enjoy every juicy and flavorful bite.
Happy cooking! 🍔🌟

I am NOT a fan of turkey burgers. I had too many growing up and they were terrible. My husband is trying to cut back on red meat and insisted I give these a try. he liked the sound of them. I have to say I was wrong. There is a way to make turkey burgers that make you go “mmmm” and this is it. I make these weekly now. Thank you Deb!
